Having assumed the role of President of the European Olympics Committees (EOC) in 2006, Patrick Hickey has pursued a clear agenda of promoting participation and a love of sports at all levels throughout Europe.
A lifelong participant in sports himself, Patrick has represented Ireland in Judo (black belt) on many occasions, remaining active at the highest levels of competition until retiring at the age of 45. To this end, he is Honorary Life President of the Irish Judo Association.
Patrick is also President of the Olympic Council of Ireland since 1989. His love of the Olympics saw him take on the role of Chef de Mission at the Games of the XXIV Olympiad in Seoul in 1988, and at the Games of the XXV Olympiad in Barcelona in 1992.
An IOC Member since 1995, he now plays an active role on several IOC Commissions including Marketing and Olympic Solidarity.
Prior to becoming EOC President, Patrick Hickey was Vice President of EOC (1997-2001) then Secretary General (2001-2006). Since 1994, he has been a Member of the Executive Board of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC).
When not overseeing his property and business interests or spending time with his wife (Sylviane) and 4 children, he enjoys playing football, squash, tennis and golf, and can found daily enjoying a 10km run in Dublin’s famous ‘Phoenix Park.
